TEACHING METHODS

The Postgraduate Program "Structural Geology and Tectonics, Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology," proposes a blended learning system combining:

  • Face-to-face instruction,
  • Synchronous, and
  • Asynchronous online learning.

This is facilitated through a specially designed online platform (e-class), where e-learning materials are developed and virtual classrooms are operated using certified, state-of-the-art Learning Management Systems (LMS), offering a variety of features and functionalities for both learners and instructors. The platform is accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Educational material can be uploaded to the online platform for each course, and may include notes, presentations, exercises, sample solutions, and video lectures, provided that the current legislation on the protection of personal data is complied with.

Asynchronous online courses are conducted via the internet on a certified education system of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. A typical distribution of teaching methods in the program's courses, as indicated in the course syllabi, is approximately 75-80% face-to-face and synchronous online learning, and 20-25% asynchronous online learning. Lectures are conducted through face-to-face and synchronous online instruction, while other activities such as research for writing assignments, reviewing visual materials for completing closed or open-ended exercises, etc., are conducted through asynchronous online learning.

The assessment tools and feedback mechanisms used in distance learning include:

  • Exercises: Creation of closed-ended exercises (multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank).
  • Assignments: Management, submission, and grading of assignments.
  • Questionnaires: Creation of surveys and polls.
  • Gradebook: Recording of learners' grades.
  • Attendance: Recording of learners' attendance and absences.
  • Progress: Helping learners improve their performance and achieve their goals.
  • Statistics: User statistics.

The equipment required for students to participate in distance learning may include a personal computer or a portable device (e.g. tablet, smartphone) with an internet connection.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is responsible for supporting the distance learning process and addressing issues related to the protection of personal data.

All educational material is provided exclusively for the educational use of students and is protected by Law.
